Total Stations FAQs
How does a Total Station work?
A total station is a electronic measurement device that uses a laser, telescope, and a reflector to measure distances by the time it takes for the beam to travel to an object. Total stations also have an in-built electronic theodolite to measure horizontal and vertical angles. The on-board computer can store the measurement data once it has been collected, with surveyors having the option to operate some total stations remotely. There are various types of total stations, each of which function differently due to different features and capabilities.
What are the four types of Total Stations?
When choosing a total station for their surveying project, surveyors have the option between:
- Robotic Total Stations
- Mechanical Total Stations
- Scanning Total Stations
- Autolock Total Stations
Each of these products have their own pros and cons which help inform which the best choice for certain projects. Your choice of total station will also depend on existing workflows.
What are the applications of a Total Station?
A total station is an all encompassing piece of surveying equipment that can be used in projects across a range of industries. This includes Construction, Engineering, Land Surveying, Archeology, and practically any project that requires the collection of accurate geospatial data.
